Photos published by North Korean media show the sister of leader Kim Jong Un, Kim Yo Jong, using one of the latest foldable smartphones. The image, released yesterday by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), was taken during the opening ceremony of a hospital in the city of Kosong, North Pyongan province. In the photo, Kim Yo Jong is holding the smartphone in her right hand. Although the manufacturer's name is not visible in the image, the device appears to be from the 'Magic' series by the Chinese company Honor, which was marketed as the world's thinnest foldable phone. However, it is also known that North Korea produces its own brand of smartphones. Additionally, many smartphones manufactured by Chinese companies are supplied and sold in North Korea through an OEM system. South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported that if the smartphone held by Kim Yo Jong was imported from China, it would violate United Nations sanctions on North Korea, as UN Security Council Resolution 2397 prohibits the import and export of electronic devices to the country. This is not the first time a foldable phone has been spotted in North Korean media. In July 2023, a foldable phone was placed on the table in front of leader Kim Jong Un during the launch of the Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile. A month prior, a foldable phone was also identified in the hands of Hyon Song Wol, vice director of the Workers' Party of Korea, during a public event.
