Kim Jong Un Calls for Massive Nuclear Expansion

During a recent visit to a nuclear facility, Kim Jong Un urged a massive expansion of North Korea's nuclear capabilities, indicating a significant escalation in military policy. This comes as tensions rise with the U.S., marking a critical moment in negotiations over denuclearization.

Kim Jong Un Calls for Massive Nuclear Expansion

After visiting the facilities for enrichment, Kim called for the massive expansion of the country's nuclear power. Some experts note that centrifuges have a new and more effective design, requiring a reassessment of estimates related to the nuclear power of North Korea. Important deals and agreements on missiles, non-proliferation, positioning, or scaling back North Korea's nuclear program could be on the table.

Strategic expert Robert Gallucci noted: "Preliminary steps could be taken to restore the abolished sanction regime against North Korea, losing effectiveness, and also in the serious reconsideration of military studies conducted in Washington in South Korea to avoid unnecessary provocations, with the need for long-term normalization of relations between the USA, South Korea, and North Korea."

On the other side, the successor of President Kamala Harris reiterated the same positions as the Biden administration. Experts in Washington all converge on the need to reassess the main tenets of US policy regarding North Korea.

Earlier, the states experienced increased tensions in relations. North Korean President Kim Jong Un conducted a notable demonstration of the nuclear capabilities of his country. This demonstrates a new direction in North Korea's military policy, prompting observers to ponder whether this will lead to a reassessment of the administration’s strategy regarding this country.

Korean affairs expert John Merrill, in his report published in the journal "National Interest," pointed out that the problem with North Korea unexpectedly surfaced last month, when its leader announced a new facility for uranium enrichment capable of producing highly enriched uranium for building nuclear warheads while also reviving tests of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.

Estimates vary, but some analysts suggest that North Korea could secure itself uranium in sufficient volume for the production of up to 200 nuclear warheads by 2027. The establishment of a new plant for centrifuge installation adds to this number.
