North Korea Accelerates Heir Appointment

South Korean intelligence reported yesterday that North Korea appears to be accelerating efforts to appoint Kim Jong Un's daughter, Kim Jong Un, as his heir. This assessment is based on her recent public appearance where she was seen driving a new tank alongside her father. Lawmakers Park Won and Lee Seung-koon stated that the National Intelligence Service provided this assessment during a closed session of the parliamentary intelligence committee. The agency said: "Kim Jong Un has recently appeared in defense-related sectors, and it is believed this aims to dispel doubts about a female heir and to expedite efforts to build a succession narrative." Last month, North Korean state media reported that Kim Jong Un personally supervised military exercises involving new tanks and published photos of his daughter, believed to be a teenager, driving one of the tanks with her father and several soldiers. The National Intelligence Service suggested that the report likely aims to highlight Kim Jong Un's military capabilities and also serves as praise for Kim Jong Un himself, who was also seen driving a tank in footage aired by state media before he succeeded his father, former leader Kim Jong Il. Kim Jong Un is widely considered the potential successor to the current leader, and her appearances with her father at significant domestic events have increased. North Korea has been ruled by men from the Kim family for three generations over the past eight decades.
